Hello, friends! As the year winds down and the winter nights grow longer, it’s a good time to think about how we can find peace and balance, even in the most challenging of circumstances. This week’s story is about navigating the ups and downs of dementia care, showing that with the right support, even the toughest days can get a little brighter.
Mrs. Betty, a retired schoolteacher from St. Sampson’s, is a lady full of personality. Known for her love of poetry and a stubborn streak a mile wide, Betty has been living with dementia for several years. Her daughter Claire, determined to care for her mum at home, has done an amazing job juggling her responsibilities—until recently.
Over time, Betty’s care needs grew, and so did Claire’s exhaustion. Late nights became the norm, and Claire found herself running on endless cups of tea and little sleep. Betty, meanwhile, remained blissfully unaware of the chaos she sometimes caused. One night, Claire found her mum trying to “write a letter to the Queen” on the back of a shopping receipt using a carrot as a pen!
Despite Claire’s love for her mum, she realised she couldn’t do it all on her own. That’s when Sarnia Carers stepped in. By providing expert dementia care tailored to Betty’s needs, the carers gave Claire something priceless: time to rest and recharge.
Now, while the carers help Betty with her routines and engage her in activities she loves—like reading poetry together—Claire has her evenings back. “I actually managed to finish a whole book last week,” Claire joked. “And no, Mum, it wasn’t addressed to the Queen!”
Betty and Claire’s story is a powerful reminder that caregiving doesn’t have to mean sacrificing your own health or happiness. Here are some helpful tips for caregivers supporting a loved one with dementia:
That’s it for this week, dear friends. Remember, you don’t have to face challenges alone—support is always within reach. Stay kind to yourself, stay warm, and we’ll see you next week with another story and a little advice to brighten your days.
