Hello again friends. At the heart of our care team is the privilege of supporting extraordinary individuals with rich histories and remarkable lives. Richard is one such person—a man whose life has been intertwined with the sea, creativity, and a love for the simple joys of daily living.

A Day in the Life of Richard: From the Sea to the Screen

Richard’s story begins in Guernsey, where he was known as the only person to farm ormers, a shellfish delicacy, from the comfort of his own home in Rocquaine. His days on the sea, harvesting these precious creatures, were full of adventure, and the memories of those times are never far from his mind. Richard’s connection to the sea and its rhythm runs deep, and his tales of the ocean are full of the kinds of stories that only someone who has lived them can tell.

But Richard is not just a fisherman; he’s also an accomplished artist. His talent shines through in the stunning paintings he creates, many of which have adorned the walls of his home. Every year, Richard generously shares his work with those closest to him—staff, family, and friends—by crafting calendars featuring twelve of his own paintings. It’s a special tradition that not only showcases his artistry but also highlights his deep connection to the world around him.

Despite his achievements and rich past, Richard remains a humble and gentle man, with a zest for life that continues to inspire. He loves to dance and enjoys reminiscing about the old black-and-white movies that he cherishes. Richard can tell you everything there is to know about each film, from the actors to the iconic moments that defined an era. His love for cinema has become an essential part of his routine, providing him with a window into another world.

Each day, our visits to Richard begin early. We assist him with personal care—helping him get ready for the day, preparing breakfast, ensuring his medications are taken, and then heading out for a walk or a drive. Richard’s love for the outdoors is evident; he enjoys walking along the coastline, where the sea breeze and views bring him peace. In the summertime, he loves to paddle at the beach just opposite his home, dipping his toes into the cool water and enjoying the beauty of the surroundings.

Richard also has a special bond with the animals around him. His love for creatures is well-known, and our carers sometimes bring their dogs to visit him. He lights up at the sight of the animals, always happy to greet them with a kind word or a pat on the head. There’s something so heartwarming about the way animals, like the crows at L’Ancresse who know him by name, seem to recognize Richard and return his affection.

Afternoons are often spent relaxing, but we return for tea time, where we prepare a meal for Richard and help him get settled for the evening. This 45-minute visit ensures that Richard is comfortable, his heating is set, and he's ready to enjoy the night. It's a peaceful time, where we can chat, make sure he's well taken care of, and ensure that he's set up to enjoy the rest of his evening.

Richard’s daughter, who lives nearby, plays an incredibly supportive role in his life. Their bond is strong, and she’s a constant source of care and love for Richard. As a family, they have a deep understanding of the importance of preserving his independence while providing the right support, and it’s a joy to see how well they work together to make sure Richard feels loved and cared for.

After his tea, Richard settles down to enjoy his favorite old movies, reflecting on the stories and memories of his past. His routine is built around the things he loves—whether it’s sharing stories, spending time with nature, or watching classic films. We are fortunate to be a part of Richard’s journey, offering him care and companionship while witnessing the joy he continues to find in the world around him.
