On 4th June at The Peninsula, I had the privilege of joining an unforgettable event hosted by Julie and the wonderful team from Dementia Friendly Guernsey, featuring their outstanding presentation speaker, Ian Donaghy (widely known as “Big Ian”).
Ian’s talk was nothing short of extraordinary, powerful, warm, and brutally honest. He shared his journey with dementia in a way that was deeply moving, sometimes sad, but always full of hope and humour. There were moments that made us laugh out loud and others that brought tears to my eyes. His unique blend of honesty and fun left us all with a renewed sense of empathy and practical ideas for caring for those living with dementia.
It was also wonderful to connect with Julie and the whole Dementia Friendly Guernsey team. Their ongoing commitment to raising awareness and supporting carers across the island is truly inspiring. The event was not only informative but also incredibly heartwarming and uplifting.
What made the day even more special was seeing so many of our local deputies in attendance, showing a genuine interest in Guernsey’s healthcare system and the future of dementia care. Their presence and engagement gave us all hope for positive change and greater support for our community.
A huge thank you to Julie, Big Ian, and everyone at Dementia Friendly Guernsey for such a smashing presentation, refreshing, eye-opening, and truly special. Your passion, honesty, and care are making a real difference for families and carers across Guernsey.
